The style, explained
What makes a cake vintage?
Vintage cake design is all about visible craft: layered shell borders, swags, rosettes, scrolls and piped flourishes arranged with deliberate symmetry. The look can be soft and romantic in ivory and blush, or gloriously maximal in bright colour. What links the styles is the hand-piped finish rather than a particular flavour or occasion.
Lambeth and vintage are related, but they are not identical. The Lambeth Method is a formal tradition of over-piping and layered ornamental work. Modern vintage cakes borrow heavily from that language while taking more freedom with hearts, ribbons, colour and playful messages.
Our cakes are finished in buttercream rather than being hidden under a heavy sugar shell, so the piping is part of the cake rather than simply decoration placed on top.

The beauty of a vintage cake is that you can see the work. Borders need to meet cleanly, curves need rhythm and every repeat has to feel intentional. We pipe and finish our celebration cakes in-house, using buttercream that gives us enough definition for ornate detail without turning the cake into a sugar sculpture.
Underneath, it still has to be a very good cake. We bake fresh to order, then our own drivers hand-deliver across London and Surrey so delicate piping is not handed over to a parcel courier.
