Archive note — February 2022: This Fake Bake was made during the February 2022 school half-term around Valentine’s Day. Tesco products, £1.30 sponge prices and the under-£10 total belong to that specific 2022 shop; school-holiday dates, products and prices change.
Safety note: Children can help with cool decorating stages, but an adult should supervise and handle knives and other sharp tools.
In February 2022 Valentine’s Day and our school half-term were close enough together to make a pink Fake Bake an obvious project with X-Ray. He loved the fact that the cake was already baked and his job was mostly stacking, frosting and decorating.
For that Tesco challenge I used raspberry sponge cakes, raspberry and vanilla frosting, pink wafers, Jammie Dodgers, mini marshmallows and mini Battenbergs. The shop came in under a tenner at the time.
This is still a lovely decorating idea for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day or any occasion that calls for a pink cake.
Fake Bake Recipe - Pink Raspberry Cake
Ingredients
2x ready-made round raspberry or Victoria Sponge layer cakes (5" or 6" size)
1 tub ready-made raspberry frosting
1 tub ready-made vanilla frosting
Mini and full-size Jammie Dodgers
Pink and white mini marshmallows
Mini Battenberg cakes
Pink wafers
Method
1. Prepare the cake decorating station with a turntable, angled palette knife, cake scraper, cake board, piping bag with a small star nozzle, knife and spatula.
2. Unbox the first cake and place it on the board. Separate its sponge layers, add mini marshmallows between them, then sandwich it back together.
3. Loosen the frosting and spread a layer over the top of the first cake.
4. Stack the second cake on top, then pipe and smooth frosting over the sides and top. Add a little vanilla frosting for a marbled finish if you like.
5. Unwrap the biscuits, wafers and mini Battenbergs. An adult should cut the Battenbergs and wafers to size.
6. Pipe frosting swirls around the top.
7. Decorate with Jammie Dodgers, pink wafers, mini marshmallows and mini Battenbergs.
This was my first Fake Bakes bake-along on Instagram Stories and it was lovely seeing families join in. That 2022 participation is part of the archive rather than a live event invitation.
