A safari party is an easy children's theme because you can make it recognisable with colour, animals and a few good details rather than filling the room with branded decorations.
Start with greens, warm neutrals and one or two animal patterns. Then choose the parts that matter to the child: lions, elephants, giraffes, monkeys, butterflies or the entire menagerie.
Safari decorations without turning the room into a jungle warehouse
Paper leaves, reusable bunting, green crepe streamers and a few animal figures are enough to establish the theme. Keep decorations away from candles, food and doorways, and secure anything hanging where children cannot pull it down.
Balloons need adult supervision around young children because broken or uninflated balloons can be a choking hazard. Clear burst balloons away immediately.
Dressing up and face paint
Animal ears, tails, hats and simple colour themes are often easier than full costumes, especially if children will be running around. Avoid long trailing pieces that create a trip hazard.
If you offer face painting, use products intended for cosmetic use, follow the manufacturer's age and application guidance and ask parents about known skin sensitivities or allergies. Do not use craft paint on skin.
Safari party food
The food does not need animal shapes to work. Familiar finger food, fruit and simple snacks are easier to serve, and a few themed labels can do the decorative work.
Ask about allergies with the RSVP and keep ingredient information available. Small children also need food cut and served in a form appropriate to their age.
The safari birthday cake

Choose the cake size from the number of portions first, then decide how many animals or decorative details the design needs.
Games that fit the theme
- Sleeping lions: useful when everybody needs two quiet minutes.
- Animal charades: simple, active and requires almost no equipment.
- Safari treasure hunt: hide large animal pictures or clues around a safe defined area.
- Animal movement race: hop like a frog, stomp like an elephant or crawl like a bear, adjusted to the children's ages and the space available.
A simple craft table
Paper masks, colouring sheets and large stickers are easy take-home activities. Match the materials to the age group: small sequins, beads and other tiny craft pieces are not suitable for young children who may put them in their mouths.
The useful rule for a themed party is to repeat a few ideas rather than buying everything with an animal printed on it. One colour palette, one activity, one cake and a handful of details will usually do more than twenty disposable props.
