Looking for unique baby shower cake ideas? This playful stork baby shower cake was designed for a London celebration and quickly became one of our favourite luxury baby shower cakes, complete with an exhausted stork, fluffy clouds, and a very important slice of cake.
I wanted to make a baby shower cake for my friend that didn’t fall into the usual trap of twee toes, tiny shoes and sentimental teddy bears. If you’ve ever searched baby shower cakes online, you’ll know the genre: pastel fondant, saccharine smiles, and enough cuteness to make your eyelids droop shut. I very nearly face-planted my keyboard while scrolling through the sea of sameness.
The stork has been associated with new babies for centuries. In European folklore, the long-legged bird was said to deliver newborns in baskets, flying across rooftops to leave them with expectant families. Usually the legend depicts them as tireless and graceful. My version? Not so much.
This time, I wanted something different, something whimsical, a little cheeky, and absolutely in keeping with our signature high-end aesthetic. Cakes like this usually begin as bespoke commissions, a tiny story, a family joke, or a moment that deserves to be turned into sugar and sponge. So I dreamt up a fat, knackered stork halfway through its long-haul flight to Earth, pausing for a breather with my friend’s precious cargo safely tucked away.

The stork, of course, had to look properly exhausted. I gathered a stack of reference images and began modelling a chubby sugarpaste version, slumped, slightly rumpled, and absolutely done in. I added a little basket with a quilted fondant blanket in pink and blue, though my favourite detail was the wooden-style signpost I carved from chocolate and KitKat, etched with the countdown to her due date.
The cake itself was a tall two-tier number, alternating layers of vanilla and chocolate sponge made with our beloved Hero recipe, finished with silky vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream. (And yes, because the egg whites are cooked, mums-to-be can tuck in without a second thought.)

I piped soft clouds around the weary stork, the little basket, and the chocolate signpost counting down to her due date. It looked utterly adorable. But I couldn’t resist adding one more flourish: a teeny comic-style slice of cake. Because frankly, the only believable reason for a stork to interrupt a transcontinental delivery schedule would be cake.

We had it delivered to The Lighterman in Granary Square, Kings Cross.
Word to the wise: The Lighterman charges a cakeage fee, so it’s worth checking ahead before bringing your own celebration cake.
Our group of twenty sat along a long table by the floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking the canal — a lovely backdrop for baby chat, laughter, and generous helpings of sugar.

The food was great, the company even better, and the cake? Well, it did exactly what a celebration cake should do: make everyone laugh, then immediately ask where they could get one.
And no, you don’t need to be friends with me to have this beauty. Our stork baby shower cake is now available to order across London and Surrey.

Planning a Baby Shower Cake
If you’re organising a baby shower in London or Surrey, the cake usually becomes the centrepiece of the celebration. Many hosts choose humorous themes - like storks, prams or clouds - while others prefer elegant pastel cakes or personalised designs with the baby’s due date.
For something completely unique, many designs begin as bespoke cakes, turning a personal story into an edible centrepiece.
What Makes a Good Baby Shower Cake?
A great baby shower cake should do three things: celebrate the parents-to-be, delight the guests, and tell a small story. Whether it’s a playful stork, a personalised design with the due date, or an elegant pastel centrepiece, the best baby shower cakes feel joyful, memorable and unmistakably personal.
Baby Shower Cake FAQs
What makes a good baby shower cake?
A good baby shower cake combines flavour, personality and celebration. Designs often include symbolic elements like storks, prams, clouds or baby baskets, while flavours tend to be light, crowd-pleasing and beautifully finished.
Can baby shower cakes be customised?
Yes, many designs begin as bespoke creations where colours, toppers and themes are tailored to the parents-to-be. Small details like name plaques, due-date signs or themed decorations make the cake feel truly personal.
Do baby shower cakes have to be pastel?
Not at all. Pastels are traditional, but modern baby shower cakes can be elegant, humorous, bold or completely unexpected, especially when the design leans into character and storytelling.
