Without a doubt one of my favourites spots in Surrey. The Anchor offers up classic pub grub done well and is set in an tranquil and scenic environment on the River Wey. In the summer it bustles outside while during the winter it's super cosy with real log fires that are always on. It's no secret that their oak beamed conservatory is a glorious place to celebrate any occasional in style. It's cosy yet full of light. Just 5 mins off the A3 before the turn off to Heathrow.
Gorse Hill is a Grade II listed manor house set in the Surrey countryside. It has only recently been renovated having been used as a training venue for most of it's life. In fact, it's history is unusually interesting for stately homes - it was built for a Mr John Ingram in 1910 whom insured the Titanic. And when the unsinkable ship sank, his fortune sank with it and he sold the house just as it was completed. It wasn't until 2017 that it was restored and now operates as a hotel and venue. It is able to seat up to 150 guests and offers a number of spaces for smaller gatherings. It's also very popular for afternoon teas and birthday celebrations - we highly recommend one our tiddly tiers cakes!
Definitely one of Woking's best pubs for celebrations. It's simply a good pub with a lovely garden, good food and warm staff.
We're not a 100 percent about this venue as we have not been ourselves yet. Since is very new we thought we would include it until we visit.
For picnics WITH CAKE!, like so much of Surrey you are spoilt for choice. There are the pristine woods at Horsell and Pyrford, the all year round beautiful Papercourt Lake and the stunning heathlands at Ash and Brookwood. If you are having a picnic and want to take a cake, we can advise you on storage and travel. If you are a fan of War of the Worlds and or HG Wells, you can walk a trail to the Sandpits – the site of the infamous Martian landing. And don’t miss enormous Martian on the common.
Take a short walk to Horsell from the city centre and explore a collection of interesting independent shops.
Woking helped change the cake industry!
Woking is the home of the modern mixer! In 1950 at the Ideal Home Exhibition, an inventor called Kenneth Wood showcased a mixer with a fundamental difference that cannot be understated – the mixer had attachments! It was called the Kenwood Chef Mixer and after over 70 years the design hasn’t changed and has been copied across the world. Kenneth Wood made a luxury item a necessity and it took the country by storm. Just think if mixers never entered the home, home much cake baking would there be.
