X-Ray is a cake maker’s son. Naturally, the pressure to deliver an unforgettable 5th birthday cake was *palpable*. The stakes felt absurdly high — largely because I’d been planning and re-planning his cake for months while his interests ping-ponged between Paw Patrol, Ninjago, Lego and Superheroes.
Eventually, I managed to gently steer him toward Superheroes — a theme I’d been longing to dive into properly, partly for him and partly because my inner cake nerd was desperate to flex.

But he didn’t stop there. Oh no. He wanted a rainbow cake, plus a mini rainbow cake *just for himself*, a piñata cake filled with M&Ms, a chocolate cake with sprinkles, all the Marvel heroes… AND Batman.

Too much to fit into a single tiered cake, which is how we landed on the idea of a full-blown Cakescape. For the uninitiated, a Cakescape is a layout of multiple cakes on the same level rather than stacked — giving you glorious surface area for decoration and truly spectacular party drama. Just look at our Under the Sea, Jungle Monkey and Hungry Caterpillar versions. They always get open-mouthed reactions.
Cakescapes, however, are *labour intensive*. I started by making fondant decorations — Captain America’s shield, Thor’s hammer, Hulk’s fist, a crawling Spiderman and, of course, Batman. Then came the marathon bake of rainbow sponge layers (using our beloved Hero Sponge) alongside chocolate layers.

For the piñata cake, I hollowed out small sections from the lower layers and filled them to the brim with M&Ms. The cakes were then frosted in superhero primary colours. The mini cake was covered entirely in red, white, and blue sprinkles to echo Captain America’s shield — and yes, there was even a teeny-tiny rainbow piñata cake too.

I added a small two-tier cake for Spiderman: a sprinkle fault-line base and a top tier stencilled with the London skyline.

You never really know how a Cakescape will look until the final stretch. Once the buttercream spiderwebs went on and the fondant figurines took their places, everything sprang to life.

Batman was originally front and centre, but I simply couldn’t bring myself to mix Marvel and DC that boldly. So he quietly migrated to the back — which worked out perfectly as X-Ray would be standing behind the cake anyway, giving him pride of place from his angle.

The cake alone nearly finished me — and then we hosted X-Ray’s first proper party with all his school friends in Twickenham. It was full superhero chaos, but the look on his face made every late night, sprinkle explosion, and piping-bag cramp worth it.

Love, Reshmi xoxo
