As we mark every milestone with cake, the pressure really is on to out-do ourselves with X-ray’s cakes. I know it’s silly, and it’s probably really more “me” piling on the pressure as opposed to our friends and family but I also see it as a better time than ever to unleash the creative cake streak. A time when I can totally indulge ourselves whilst flexing the creative brain cells and pushing our caking boundaries.

For X-ray’s 6 month birthday milestone we had created the Ice Cream Parlour cake, which really was more for me than him obvs. But as we had a few kids coming for his christening I wanted his christening cake to be different, more kid-ish, but in a non-tacky, non-novelty way that would also appeal to the grown ups.

Peter Rabbit was literally everywhere this spring (can we even call it spring?!? Like what even was that weather?!) - in the cinemas, in the shops, on X-ray’s babygrows and blankets. Growing up, I wasn’t exposed to Peter Rabbit, and it was one of those things I just kind of heard about every so often in passing. I also assumed Peter Rabbit’s wife was Jessica Rabbit so when I actually saw what Peter Rabbit looked like I was like whoaaa Pete’s punchin’! And that Jessica is a bit too sexy for a kiddy cartoon character isn’t she??

Of course, my world was turned upside down when I found out, NEWSFLASH - Peter Rabbit and Jessica Rabbit are not married, or related in any way. And come to think of it Jessica Rabbit isn’t even a rabbit...what the fish?!

Anyway, now that I am more woke about the heritage of Peter Rabbit I decided that was going to be X-ray’s cake. We love carrot cake, so that ties is very nicely. The team set about modelling Peter out of fondant. The first model came out looking like Pete had been on the sun beds a bit much.

But we eventually got there with the Peter I was happy with and got on with the rest of the design - buttercream cabbages and carrots, Oreo cookie “soil” and a cute buttercream picket fence, foliage and flowers. With the Swiss meringue buttercream in a lovely sky blue, the whole  two-tiered cake came together in a gorgeous, earthy organic fashion, and to my delight, it got serious insta-approval!

The Peter Rabbit cake was delivered to the Roebuck on Richmond Hill - a cosy family pub with stellar views overlooking the famous Turner’s view and the river. The kids loved it! And I think X-ray did too...despite putting his foot through the bottom tier during the photos.
