The Best and Worst Celebrity Wedding Cakes

Kim-K-and-Kris-Humphries-worst celebrity wedding cake feature

Archive note: This is an opinion piece about celebrity wedding-cake design. The visual criticism is ours; old price, flavour and event details have been removed where we could not verify them reliably. The point is the cake, not the people.

Celebrity Wedding Cakes We Loved

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds

Their tiered cake mixed a heavily decorated floral base with cleaner tiers above. We love the tension between romantic ruffles and sharp tier edges: ornate without becoming a sugar avalanche.

Fearne Cotton and Jesse Wood

This one embraced colour. A tall cake covered with bright florals is exactly the sort of centrepiece that gives a reception something to talk about. It looks celebratory rather than dutiful.

Kate Moss and Jamie Hince

Delicate piping, sugar flowers and a properly considered silhouette. It feels detailed without looking as though every decorating technique in the cupboard was thrown at it.

George and Amal Clooney

The square Art-Deco styling was a welcome break from standard round white tiers. Strong geometry on a wedding cake can look severe in the wrong hands; here the proportions make it feel deliberate and glamorous.

Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie

A stripped-back cake can go very wrong. This one kept the romantic look coherent: light finish, flowers doing the decorative work, and none of the random clutter that often gets added when somebody loses confidence in a simple design.

Celebrity Wedding Cakes We Would Have Changed

Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries

Our issue is the composition: dark glossy tiers interrupted by uneven shapes without a visual rhythm that ties them together. Expensive does not automatically mean coherent.

Khloé Kardashian and Lamar Odom

There are several strong decorative languages fighting for attention at once: stencilling, dots, florals, dark trim and pale tiers. Pick two ideas and let them breathe.

Prince William and Catherine

The craftsmanship is extraordinary. Our complaint is simply taste: the dense traditional decoration feels much more formal than the wedding-cake styles we enjoy making. You can respect the piping skill and still not want it on your own table.

Prince Harry and Meghan

The intentionally informal buttercream finish divided us. We like relaxed cakes, but here the irregular tiers and ornate stands felt like two different styling briefs meeting at the last minute.

Victoria and David Beckham

Vines, fruit and figurative decoration made this unforgettable. Whether that is good or bad depends on your tolerance for late-1990s theatricality. We would have edited the idea rather than added to it.

This is cake criticism, not a verdict on anyone’s marriage, intelligence, politics or personality. A wedding cake is allowed to be gloriously personal—and other cake people are allowed to have opinions about the piping.
