Kitsch Chicken Cake

A super cute and kitsch cake of Belgian chocolate sponge and green vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream, decorated with hand-piped ruffles, ropes, blossoms and chickens. The sponge is soft, moist and rich, layered with silky buttercream for a smooth and rounded mouthfeel.

This cake design was a true "trust-the-process" process. Initial iterations were more vintage with overly ornate piped Lambeth ruffles. But I wanted the chickens to feel at home - less Versailles, more country farm. So we scraped off the OTT ruffles and added piped blossoms and criss-cross details to give it a joyful kitsch look. 

Sponge:

Vanilla – Flour (wheat, gluten), sugar, egg, milk, buttermilk (milk), yoghurt (milk), sunflower and rapeseed oil, baking powder, vanilla extract, salt.

Chocolate – Flour (wheat, gluten), sugar, egg, milk, cocoa, sunflower and rapeseed oil, sodium bicarbonate (raising agent: E500), instant coffee granules, vanilla extract.

Lemon – Flour (wheat, gluten), sugar, egg, milk, buttermilk (milk), yoghurt (milk), sunflower and rapeseed oil, baking powder, lemon zest, lemon juice, natural lemon flavouring with other natural flavourings, vanilla extract, salt.

Red VelvetWheat flour (gluten), eggs, milk, buttermilk (milk), sunflower and rapeseed oil, sugar, baking powder, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, colouring: Red (Vegetable Glycerine E422, Mono Propylene Glycol E1520, Water, Ponceau 4R E124, Allura Red E129).
