Burn-Away Cakes: The Edible Reveal With A Flame
Archive note: This article records the burn-away trend as it took off in 2024. Burn-away cakes are still available from Anges de Sucre, but a trend article should not be treated as a current measure of popularity. Our later 2026 first-party sales data shows the format’s share fell sharply from its 2025 level.
A burn-away cake uses a top edible wafer-paper image positioned above a second edible image. The top sheet is ignited for a short reveal so the image beneath becomes visible. The appeal is obvious: it turns a cake into a small piece of theatre.
What the flame is actually doing
Wafer paper is combustible. That does not mean it “burns cleanly”, that combustion residue is harmless, or that every edible-print material is suitable for burning. Use only food-contact components intended for the application, follow the paper/ink manufacturer’s guidance and keep the flame away from other decorations.
After the reveal, extinguish the flame fully and remove loose ash or charred wafer before slicing and serving the cake.
Basic construction
- Finish and chill the cake so the buttercream surface is firm.
- Place the lower edible image onto the cake.
- Pipe a buttercream border that creates separation between the two image layers.
- Rest the wafer-paper image above the lower image and secure it with the intended border.
- Keep all other decorations clear of the burn area.
Fire safety matters more than the reel
An adult should control the flame in a clear, well-ventilated area, away from hair, clothing, candles, paper decorations and anything else combustible. Never leave the flame unattended. A burn-away cake is a brief reveal, not a licence to set fire to the dessert table.
If you would rather skip the edible printer and open-flame setup, see the current Burn-Away collection. Availability and delivery information live there; this article remains the technique and trend explainer.
