Custom Birthday Cake Case Study
When London gets hot, cake makers age in dog years. This custom dog lover birthday cake arrived during a heatwave, which made an already tall two-tier cake with a very high centre of gravity feel even more thrilling, in the cortisol sense of the word.

The Dog-Led Brief
Alex has been ordering family cakes from us since 2016, which is a lovely long run of birthdays, celebrations and edible panic. For this one, the brief was specific: dogs. A retriever, a husky and Eevee from Pokemon, who may or may not technically be a dog, but cake is not a zoology exam.
The cake was made from two tall tiers of chocolate Hero Sponge, with three sponge layers in each tier. The edible dog house, retriever, husky and Eevee-style figure were sculpted from sugarpaste, with cake fudge soil, dog treats and piped grass to finish the scene.

The Delivery Stress
The finished cake was over a metre tall, heavy and delicate, which is a spicy combination in warm weather. It was chilled hard overnight so it could travel safely, then delivered intact, to enormous relief all round.

Custom, Not Bespoke
This sits in custom birthday cake territory. The brief was based on pets, character-style figures and a themed dog-house scene. That is far more involved than adding a name or plaque, but it is not a blank-page private commission.
- The theme was custom because the dogs, dog house and treats were made around the brief.
- The modelling was custom because the figures were sculpted by hand.
- The structure mattered because the height and delivery conditions shaped the build.
