Bespoke Cricket Themed Birthday Cake in London

Cricket Birthday Cake London
Bespoke Birthday Cake Case Study

If you are celebrating an 80th birthday at Lord’s Cricket Ground, a cricket themed birthday cake is not really optional. It is the edible punctuation mark at the end of a very good sentence.

A three tier chocolate birthday cake for an 80th celebration at Lord’s Cricket Ground, finished with hand-modelled cricket details and a very personal topper.

A Cricket Cake For Lord’s

The brief was wonderfully clear: a cricket themed birthday cake for a dad’s 80th birthday party at the legendary Lord’s Cricket Ground. That sort of setting deserves more than a token bat on top and a hopeful blob of green icing.

For anyone looking through our birthday cakes, this is a strong example of how a hobby-led cake can feel grown-up, thoughtful and polished. The theme was cricket, but the real subject was the birthday gentleman himself.

The Cake Itself

The cake was made with soft chocolate Hero sponge using Valrhona cocoa, giving it a deep chocolate flavour without bitterness. Each tier was layered with chocolate Swiss meringue buttercream, hazelnut praline paste and crushed hazelnuts.

And by each tier, I do mean all three. It would have been rude to let one tier have all the fun.

Occasion

An 80th birthday celebration at Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Flavour

Chocolate Hero sponge with Valrhona cocoa, chocolate Swiss meringue buttercream, hazelnut praline and crushed hazelnuts.

Finish

Hand-modelled cricket details, buttercream grass and a custom sculpted topper.

The cricket decorations were hand-modelled, including bats, balls, wickets and a scoreboard reading 80 Still Batting.

The Personal Detail

The topper was sculpted to represent the customer’s dad. He was described as dapper and stylish, so we dressed him in a linen jacket over his cricket whites, keeping the design both on theme and true to his personality.

This is where bespoke cake work becomes more interesting than simple theming. A cricket cake could easily become generic. Add the right personal details, and suddenly it belongs to one person, one family and one very specific celebration.

The sculpted topper brought the cake back to the person being celebrated, not just the sport.

Simple, But Not Plain

I do love an extravagant cakescape, but there is something deeply satisfying about a simple, well-executed tiered cake where the hand-modelled details can shine. This cake had cricket paraphernalia, wickets, balls, bats, a large scoreboard and piped buttercream grass, but the finish still felt controlled.

Sometimes simple is not the opposite of dramatic. Sometimes it is what lets the drama land properly.

What This Shows About Bespoke Cakes

This cake shows why the best hobby-led designs are not really about the hobby at all. They are about the person. Cricket gave the cake its visual language, but the dapper topper, the Lord’s setting, the 80 Still Batting scoreboard and the flavour choices made it feel like a private family commission.

It also shows why a clear bespoke cake consultation is useful. For a cake like this, the date, venue, portions, budget, theme and personal details all help shape the final design.

  • The brief was personal because it was built around a real celebration at Lord’s.
  • The flavour was properly considered with chocolate sponge, Valrhona cocoa, praline and hazelnut across all three tiers.
  • The decoration was focused because the cricket details supported the story without overwhelming the cake.
  • The result felt grown-up because the design was polished, personal and celebration-ready.

Planning A Milestone Birthday Cake?

For a celebration built around a favourite sport, venue, story or family joke, gather the details that matter most and let the cake do something more interesting than merely match the theme.
