Unbelievable Peanut Butter Facts

Top trivia that more than justifies your peanut butter addiction

This was going to be titled ‘A Love Letter to Peanut Butter’ but then I realised I was being overly sentimental and I’m hungry.

Trendy nut butters like almond, cashew and hazelnut may be the latest health craze, but they will never be able to make my mouth water just by thinking about eating some quite like peanut butter does.

We’ve all been there...

And I know I’m not alone in having my daily work interrupted by a hankering for a spoonful of the golden goodness. Americans alone consume £650 million of the stuff every year, which is enough to coat the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

I mean, seriously, I’m starting to wonder if there should be a Peanut Butter Addicts Anonymous thing going on.

Wait, is there?

It turns out that there’s a PBAA Pinterest board with 398 followers, which totally confirms my suspicion that peanut butter is habit forming and resistance is futile…

Here are some unbelievably cool-as Peanut Butter Trivia Factoids:

Peanut Butter Fact 1

As mentioned, everyone's probably a PB-addict unless you suffer from Archibutyrophobia, aka the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of one's mouth, which means you’re probably pretty freaked out about my earlier idea of grabbing a spoonful because, you know, it could stick to the roof of your mouth, duh.

Peanut Butter Fact 2

The Aztecs and Incas must’ve been ok with the idea of peanut butter touching the roof of their mouths because they would make a peanut paste and use it to treat toothache.

Peanut Butter Fact 3

While there are more reliable toothache remedies around these days, the health benefits of peanut butter are still being researched. The University of Florida found that it contains antioxidants and oleic acids that help prevent type 2 diabetes and aid weight loss. So PB in a cake makes it healthy yes?!

Peanut Butter Fact 4

If you needed another reason to go for a peanut butter birthday cake, then you’ll be thrilled to learn that peanuts aren’t nuts at all. They’re actually legumes and related to beans, peas and lentils. Therefore… peanut butter is a vegetable! Vegetables are healthy. You should definitely have another slice of the vegetable cake.

Peanut Butter Fact 5

As well as being a super healthy vegetable spread, peanut butter is incredibly versatile. The flavour can be combined with other savoury things- hello satay sauce- or paired with sweet flavours like PB’s best mate chocolate. (If I had you at PB and chocolate, check out our chocolate peanut butter maltshake cupcakes.)

Peanut Butter Fact 6

And when you add a sprinkle of sea salt or a crumbling of bacon into the mix, you truly have a salty sweet nirvana.

Peanut Butter Fact 7

Less appetising however, is the Dutch word for peanut butter. Pindakaas literally means ‘peanut cheese’ since there’s technically no butter in there and the Dutch are tough on false advertising. Lie to me all you like, because I’m not touching peanut cheese!

Peanut Butter Fact 8

And apparently men prefer crunchy PB. I dug up this fact and now I just want to know why?!

If you’re a man- or a woman for that matter- I want to know what’s your favourite style of PB? And how to do you like to eat it? In a sandwich or slathered over slices of apple?

OBVIOUSLY my favourite way is in a cake, on a cake, or near a cake. Like our berry peanut buttercup cake:

Raspberry Peanut ButterCup Cake

We added flecks of freeze-dried raspberry to the classic PB/chocolate/vanilla combo to give it a bit of tartness and oomph!
