When I first designed our famous Alice in Wonderland cake...it was for Selfridges!
Our three-tiered Alice in Wonderland cake was displayed across floors in one of the world's best department stores. It got so much attention that a famed TV chef from the US called Sandra Lee shared a photo of it and critiqued its price in a roundabout way.
One of my favourite quotes is by John Ruskin the philosopher -
I often come back to this quote whenever I hear criticism on our pricing and comparisons. Yep, I know we have competitors, but we cannot afford to be in competition with them. And that's simply because creating the cakes that we do, using the ingredients that we use, and providing the service that we do (including free delivery across London, Surrey and Berkshire), is going to cost us what it costs us.
Flash forward seven years, and our Alice in Wonderland cake is now a certified Anges de Sucre classic. We've made hundreds of them as birthday and wedding cakes.
Three layers of red velvet hero sponge cake, blue and white striped Swiss meringue buttercream, chocolate ganache drip, a chocolate teapot and chocolate teacups swilling salted caramel ganache 'tea', macarons, hand-piped buttercream roses, fondant toadstools and playing cards.
And our customers are still loving it just as much. Just last week we got two lovely reviews on Google.
Our Alice in Wonderland cake has been much copied. Local bakeries have made cheaper versions. Way back in the day, that bothered me a bit. I used to be precious about my "designs". Now? Not at all. Why? Because our customers will come to us if they value us. And we only want to bake for those customers who value us! Why would we want to bake for anyone who doesn't, right?
Lots of love,
